Summary
I was first exposed to the Mavica series at work - we used FD75 for product build and test verification (among other things). The ability to use the camera and immediately walk away with stored media was very appealing - no running back and forth to a computer, easy to just give floppy to a friend, or to drop floppy into product data packs. Normal focus is good, but the macro capability is phenomenal - zoom in on microelectronics, coins, flowers, bugs - it's astounding. No view finder, but you easily become accustomed to the LCD. Allows user to set many variables; format, size, quality, focus (although has great autofocus), date/time, image presets, and many others. The camera, as kitted for sale, comes with everything except storage media. It is capable of 2 modes of storage; floppy or memory stick. Aside from battery recharging equipment, it comes with USB port connector harness, and cable harness to connect the camera to the television for viewing as well (haven't tried it yet). Comes with nice Sony logo neck strap, and tethered lens cap. Camera is aesthetically pleasing, and has good overall quality appeal - consistent with Sony products. I was considering the FD87, but for $100 more, I more than doubled the optical/digital zoom, and got two storage modes (floppy/memory stick). Many competitors, but for my needs the FD92 gets the buy!
Strengths
Size is good ergonomically; well fit to the hand - buttons in good location. Zoom is great considering pricier neighbors; 8X-opt, 16X-dig -put money into optics over pixel count. Macro focus capability is great - major distinction. At lowest pic size, you can take a lot of pictures on a floppy - more than adequate for my needs (work & internet). Portability of storage media - hey, who can't handle a floppy. User interface in LCD is very intuitive - easy to navigate, and change settings. Durability - very solid feel, resilient to inadvertent bumps. Battery life is very good. Great value (feature + quality per dollar).
Weaknesses
Time delay inhibits spontaneous capture of subject - not exactly a point and shoot camera. Flash can be overpowering.
